1. Initial Document Preparation

One location

CaseLines is a single bundle store that saves time and effort when organising and presenting the document bundle for a case.

Multiple document types

A wide variety of documents are loaded without the need for pre-processing. All documents are automatically converted into PDFs including Word documents, emails, spreadsheets and many other formats.

Unprintable documents

Spreadsheets and other large ‘unprintable’ files are loaded and made available electronically from the bundle store.

Audio and video files are loaded directly into the bundle, keeping the evidence in one place. Placeholder pages are inserted into the bundle with hyperlinks to the media files.

Date ordering

Date ordering is automatic for chosen sections (e.g. evidence sections). New documents are inserted at the correct position according to their date. The index and page numbering is updated automatically.

Redaction is fast and easy. One ‘swipe’ of the mouse adds a rectangular redaction to the page. Two versions of the finished bundle are available: the redacted version and a ‘see-through’ version for internal review.

The time to identify duplicates is hugely reduced with automatic identification of individual pages that appear to be duplicates. Skewed, faded, faxed, annotated and rotated duplicates are identified with good accuracy. Side-by-side comparison supports the choice of the document that will remain in the bundle.

Split & Merge

It is straightforward to split documents into individual parts and to merge separate documents into one. A very useful facility when presented with pre-scanned documents that need to be unitized for the index.

The document index is updated easily and re-ordered as required.

Many people can work simultaneously on the bundle. For example one person can load documents while another applies redactions to the documents in the same section.

2. Review

Review facilities for identification of key documents

The whole bundle is reviewed on a simple-to-use screen. The index, document pages and notes are simultaneously viewable. The bundle is easily navigated and notes speedily added to identify key arguments.

Fully Searchable

The full bundle is searched in seconds using single and multiple word searches and ‘sounds-like’ capability. Scanned documents are preprocessed with OCR to aid fast searching.

Runs on all internet enabled devices

The bundle is reviewed using any internet browser enabled device with access to the bundle store.

Conferencing facilities

The bundle is accessed simultaneously with others in a geographically distributed conference. Each attendee directs others to pages in the bundle automatically using the ‘Direct to Page’ button on their screen. Comments are shared in the conference with automatic page hyperlinks available to all participants.

Comment Facilities, tagged, color coded, private or shared

Notes are added with a few clicks of the mouse. Text is highlighted on scanned PDFs or larger areas identified on the page. Notes are private or shared with others who have authorised access to the bundle. Notes are tagged according to their relevance and colour coded if required. Filtered lists of notes are available by tag and colour. Comment summaries are available as single PDFs. The summary contains all visible comments including relevant extracts from the bundle pages.

3. Disclosure

Selecting documents

Individual documents are selected for inclusion and exclusion in the disclosure bundle. For example, privileged documents are easily moved into a separate section and excluded from the disclosed index.

Traditional disclosure

The trial bundle is numbered automatically. There are choices for the color, position and size of the page number as well as continuous or section based numbering. The numbering is revised whenever a document is inserted. The numbering becomes frozen at an agreed time after which new documents are sub-numbered into the bundle e.g. 2a, 2b, 2c etc.

Electronic disclosure

Electronic disclosure gives the other party read-only access to the full bundle on CaseLines for a period of time. They are able to view the index and the documents stored without requiring a lengthy correspondence. Alternatively the other party can be sent the PDF version of the complete disclosure bundle by secure email.

Responding to requests

Requests by the other party for individual documents are quickly satisfied by downloading and sending the individual document in PDF or original format.

4. Preparation of the Trial Bundle

Court ready

The trial bundle is generated ready for presentation in the court room. The principles of the UK Supreme Court Practice Direction 14 are followed in the finished trial bundle PDF.

Automatic page numbering

The trial bundle is numbered automatically. There are choices for the color, position and size of the page number as well as continuous or section based numbering. The numbering is revised whenever a document is inserted. The numbering becomes frozen at an agreed time after which new documents are sub-numbered into the bundle e.g. 2a, 2b, 2c etc.

Index generation with page numbers

The trial bundle index is automatically generated. The index lists the bundle sections and the page number, date and title for each document within the sections.

Core bundle

Documents are selected for inclusion in a core bundle for presentation to the judge. Additional documents can be inserted into the core bundle during the trial with sub-numbering if required. The page numbering of the main bundle is displayed alongside the core bundle numbering.

Hyperlinking witness statements to evidence

Adding hyperlinks is fast and flexible. Witness statements are ‘overlaid’ with hyperlinks to specific pages in the evidence sections. The hyperlinks are maintained even as the documents move when new evidence documents are adduced. The hyperlinks are printed on the finished bundle with the name and target bundle page number and are available as automatic hyperlinks in the online review facilities.

Hyperlinking index to documents

The trial bundle PDF is bookmarked with index entries and the index itself is fully hyperlinked into the body of the bundle.

Late arriving documents sub-numbered

Late arriving documents are marked as ‘inserts’. They are sub-numbered into the bundle so as not to disturb the page numbering of the bundle. They take on the number of the previous page in the bundle plus a sequence of letters (a, b, c etc.) to an unlimited level.

Printable PDFs for whole bundle – court ready

At any time the whole trial bundle can be downloaded as one or more court ready PDFs. These can be printed or securely stored on electronic devices for off-line electronic access to the bundle in the court room.

Online usage

The bundle is available for online electronic access during the trial with full capability for navigation, annotation and collaboration in the court room.

Used for bundles between 400 and 200,000 or more pages

CaseLines is used for preparing and presenting bundles from 400 pages to 200,000 or more pages. It is used in civil, criminal and family cases. It saves up to 80% of the cost of preparing a trial bundle and contributes significantly to early settlement due to efficient disclosure and collaboration over the evidence set.
